Episode 343: Touch of Flash Salmon & Take it Slow Pike

Today the Mercury Marine Destination starts us on Lake Ontario near St. Catharines, then up to Cree Lake in Northern Saskatchewan.

First, there is a lot of water to cover on Lake Ontario so a little flash never hurts, especially with Salmon, and this little addition is one worth remembering.

Then, it’s up to Cree lake Lodge.  Charlie joins up with co - owner Brandon Schreiber as the two face challenging conditions.  Dressing for the nasty weather and staying comfortable is half the battle, but with a vicious cold front, working through lure choices for the one the fish react to is the other half.  Let the fish decide, when they do it becomes obvious.

Episode 342: Lake Erie Walleye Wonderland

Today the Mercury Marine Destination takes us over to Lake Erie near Dunnville Ontario.

After a short early morning run in the RAM, its out to Lake Erie with Fishmaster’s Ultimate Charters.  Charlie joins up with friend and owner Steve Hardcastle for big water Walleye.  When dealing with clear waters, it is either fishing deep with downriggers, or long lines, and with a little expert advice, multiple lines with side divers can be used to get out and away from the boat and still keep everything tangle free.  Line counter reels are a must to repeat successful leads, and once dialed in, it is simply set and repeat for one after another.

Episode 341: Tubes for Bass & Weedless Solutions

Today the Mercury Marine Destination takes us up to Georgian Bay, then further up north to Cochrane Ontario.

Smallmouth Bass is the target today, and while big open waters can be hard to tackle, keeping it simple is a good way to start. Tubes are incredibly productive for Bass and with a good selection, success is only a cast away.

Then later in the show, weeds can be a friend or enemy, and with fish buried deep, a weed free rig might be your only chance when nothing else is working.  Wind can make casting tough in any situation,  but ground breaking features on your equipment can make things easier than your ever thought.

Episode 340: Cree Lake Custom Spoon Lakers

Today the Mercury Marine Destination takes us up to Cree Lake in Northern Saskatchewan.

A calm morning is just the ticket to target open water Lake Trout, but if you want to catch oversized fish, make sure your tackle is up to it, and a few extra tweaks might make things even better.  Charlie can’t wait to try a custom painted spoon, and it doesn’t take long for the lake Trout to show that they like it too!

What’s a trip to Cree Lake lodge without at least a few hours targeting giant Pike in the afternoon.  Sight fishing can be fun, but if you don’t take your equipment seriously you might be missing out.

Episode 339: Sturgeon Fun on the Fraser River

Today the Mercury Marine Destination takes us to the Fraser river near Chilliwack in beautiful British Columbia.

Charlie and Terri join up with long time friend Len Ames from Len’s Sportfishing Adventures, as the two enjoy the hard-pulling Sturgeon.  These fish are true sportfish and tireless fighters.  Hooks need to be small but incredibly strong, and quality reels with smooth powerful drags are an absolute must.  With miles of potential hiding spots, new breakthroughs in fish finding technology can pay off big.  It’s an obvious advantage when you are soaking baits where fish are.

Species -  White Sturgeon

Once anchored up current of the Sturgeon, 16 – 24 oz oz weights are used to fish the bottom in front of the fish and let the scent of the bait move them to the baits.

Episode 338: Shallow Water St.Clair Muskie

Today the Mercury Marine Destination takes us over to Lake St. Clair in South Western Ontario.

After an early morning run in the RAM, Charlie joins up with Captain Jim Fleming from Drifter 2 Charters for the mighty Muskie.  Most of the success on these Shallow waters come from Planner boards to get out and away from the boat,  and line counter reels are a must to keep lures dialed in at exact depths.   With waves building and severe storms in the area, the first day is wisely cut short.  Day 2, John Heighington from Proctor Marine makes the trip,  and enjoys a welcome day out of the shop and a fun day on the water.

Episode 336: Mooching Lakers & Bisco Walleye

Today the Mercury Marine Destination takes us to Lake Ontario near St. Catharines, then north to Biscotasing.

First, when dealing with underwater currents that make trolling next to impossible, mooching can save the day!  Charlie uses spoons and a little extra flash to trigger hits from bottom hugging Lake Trout.

Then, it’s Walleye after Walleye in Bicotasing.   Charlie joins up with Brain Drysdale, owner of Ritchies End of Trail Lodge.  New equipment that helps you fish better is always a plus, and while this Walleye factory is extremely fun to fish,  a few simple tricks can help you keep the fish biting.

Episode 335: Canada’s Giant Bluefin Tuna

Today the Mercury Marine Destination takes us to North Lake on the far end of Prince Edward Island.

A run East in the RAM takes us to one of the top Bluefin Tuna destinations in the world.  Charlie and Terri absolutely love this trip and look forward to it every year and they simply can’t get enough of these hard-pulling giants.  Once again, they join up with Captain Tony MacDonald of Tony’s Tuna Fishing for this incredibly fun fishery.  Everything about this trip is enjoyable, first you catch some bait, then set up the kite for an exciting strike, and before long it’s time to hang on tight for a lengthy battle.

Episode 334: Cochrane Pike & Walleye

Today the Mercury Marine Destination takes us to Cochrane in Northern Ontario.

A run north in the Ram takes us to Cochrane Air Services for a fly in to one of the many lakes they offer.   It’s truly a treat to have a comfortable and fully equipped cabin all to yourself, not to mention an entire lightly fished lake full of Pike and Walleye!  Pike love spinnerbaits, but not all spinnerbaits are created equal, and some can even offer increased hooking and presentation advantages.

Then, who says traditional ice fishing tactics are only for hard water times, Walleye love this vertical presentation year-round.
